Dear Jenny,
Thank you for your emails. I am humbled that you have reached out to me and shared your heart. Marriage is not easy. When we are young, we go into marriage with a feeling of invincibility, that we will never make the mistakes we see others making. We look at our parents, with all their failings thinking that we will have a superior relationship to them. And, yes, it can be, but it takes a lot of work and a lot of learning.
You asked how Stan and I met – it was really quite funny, although not at the time, more embarrassing than anything. I had been attending church with a lovely family who had a 13 year old daughter, Julie.
One morning while minding my own business and waiting for the service to start, Julie suddenly jumped up from her seat.
“Justine, I want you to meet my friend”, she grabbed my hand and dragged me from my seat, down the aisle, across the back of the church, and up the other aisle. After dragging me halfway around the church building, Julie stopped abruptly.
In front of a tall dark handsome man.
If this was a Mills and Boon book, it would describe me with long hair flowing behind, and a beautiful gown gracefully trailing along after me. The church music team would have struck up an appropriate melody, with the singers crooning to me about romantic love. But it’s not and I’m not a Mills and Boon character. More like Klutz the clown.
But I didn’t trip over my own feet on the journey to destiny, nor did my skirt catch on a pew, leaving me semi-naked and embarrassed, so that’s a plus.
“Justine, this is Stanley. Stanley this is Justine.”
And having delivered her match-making piece, 13-year-old teenager ran away giggling, leaving us standing awkwardly, just a metre apart, eyeing each other up.
“Er hello,” I said. “Nice to meet you.” He nodded. “Hi.”
The music started up in my mind. ‘
He has really mischievous cheeky eyes.’ I thought.
He thought. ‘She speaks with a plum in her mouth. Out of my league, but she’s really gorgeous.’
And we both turned away embarrassed, going back to our seats.
I am looking forward to telling you more.
Justine
